You are bidding on a Vintage Penn Hall Preparatory School 1959 "Mel" Black Gold W.C. Bunting Co. Ceramic 5 3/4 Inch Beer Stein Mug.
This great looking black, with colorful gold writing and imagery, beer stein or mug would is a great historical item from the now defunct Penn Hall Preparatory School of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. The mug is in terrific shape for being 60 years old. There are no noticeable flaws in the ceramic, just some very minor imperfections on the bottom gold ring.
From the internet- "Penn Hall was founded by Thomas M. Nelson, Magnus C. Ihlseng, Matthew H. Reasner, William Alexander, and Sylvester D. Townsend in 1906 as a preparatory school for girls. What is now Alumnae Hall on the Wilson College campus was the original building for the school, which was constructed in 1908. In 1921-1922, Penn Hall was rebuilt farther north on Philadelphia Avenue. In 1927, the Junior College was added to the property while the prep school was still in operation."
The mug is adorned with 4 gold rings near the bottom and the top that circle the mug. Near the top of one side it reads in gold script "Penn Hall Preparatory School." On the same side is a circular seal logo that reads "PENN HALL CHAMBERSBURG, PENNA. 1906." Near the bottom edge on this side it also reads 1959. The other side of the mug reads "Mel" in small gold cursive letters.
On the bottom of the mug is a gold W.C. Bunting Co. U.S. logo that also reads "Since 1880, A Great Name in Pottery, Wellsville, Ohio." It also appears there is a C or U stamped in the bottom center.
This measures approximately 5 3/4 inches tall, has a 3 1/8 inch diameter opening and has a 4 inch diameter base. The thick handle is about 4 1/4 inches. This has some mass to it, weighing a couple of pounds.
Please note there is a slight glare on the photos- these were taken without a flash but the mug is glazed on the surface.
